The Slugging Percentage calculator computes the slugging percentage based on the number of singles, doubles, triples and home runs, number of at bats and number of sacrifice flies.
INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:
- (1B) Number of singles
- (2B) Number of doubles
- (3B) Number of triples
- (4B) Number of home runs
- (AB) Number of at bats
Slugging Percentage (OBP): The calculator returns the slugging percentage.
The Math / Science
The Slugging Percentage is the total bases achieved on hits divided by at bats. It is a popular measure of the power of a hitter. The name is a misnomer, as the statistic is not a percentage but a scale of measure whose computed value is a rational number in the interval [0, 4]. The following formula is used to calculate the slugging percentage: `SLG=((1B)+(2*2B)+(3*3B)+(4*4B))/(AB)`, where:
Babe Ruth holds the MLB
career slugging percentage
record (.690).
- `1B` = number of singles (hits on which the batter reaches first base safely without the contribution of a fielding error)
- `2B` = number of doubles (hits on which the batter reaches second base safely without the contribution of a fielding error)
- `3B` = number of triples (hits on which the batter reaches third base without the contribution of a fielding error)
- `4B` = number of home runs (hits on which batter successfully touched all four bases without the contribution of a fielding error or the ball going outside the park)
- `AB` = number of at bats (plate appearances, not including bases on balls, being hit by pitch, sacrifices, interference, or obstruction)
Slugging Percentage is added to the (OBP) to determine (OPS).
