The Range Factor baseball calculator computes the range factor based on the number of assists, putouts and innings.
INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following;
- (A) Assists
- (PO) Putouts
- (INN) Innings
Range Factor (RF): The calculator returns the factor.
The Math / Science
The Range Factor is a baseball statistic based on the premise that the total number of outs in which the player participates is more relevant in evaluating that player's defensive play than the percentage of cleanly handled chances as calculated by the conventional statistic fielding percentage. However, some percentages may have substantially more putouts because of a superior infield around them that commits fewer errors and turns many double plays, allowing them to receive more credit for more putouts. Also, catchers who have a lot of strikeout pitchers on their team will have a higher range factor, because the catcher gets the putout on a strikeout if the batter does not reach the base. The formula for baseball range factor is :
RF=9(A+PO)INN
where:
- RF = Range Factor
- A = number of assists (number of outs recorded on a play where a fielder touched the ball, except if such touching is the putout)
- PO = number of putouts (number of times the fielder tags, forces, or appeals a runner and he is called out as a result)
- INN = number of innings (number of innings that a player is at a certain position)
