The Math / Science
The Batting Average in baseball is defined as the number of hits divided by at bats. It is usually reported to 3 decimal places and read without the decimal: A player with a batting average of .300 is "batting three-hundred." A point (or percentage point) is understood to be .001. If necessary to break ties, batting averages could be taken to more than three decimal places. The Batting Average formula is:
BA = H/(AB)
where:
- BA = player or team's batting average
- H = number of hits (times reached base because of a batted, fair ball without error in the defense)
- AB = number of at bats (plate appearances, not including bases on balls, being hit by pitch, sacrifices, interference, or obstruction)
