The Earned Run Average calculator computes the earned run average (ERA) based on the number of earned runs and the number of innings pitched.
INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:
- (ER) Number of Earned Runs
- (IP) Number of Innings Pitched
Earned Run Average (ERA): The calculator returns the ERA.
The Math / Science
The lowest career ERA is 1.82,
set by Chicago White Sox pitcher
Ed Walsh.
The Earned Run Average in baseball is the mean of earned runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (the traditional length of a game). It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine. Runs resulting from defensive errors (including pitchers' defensive errors) are recorded as unearned runs and omitted from ERA calculations. The formula for Earned Run Average is:
ERA=9•ER/IP
where:
- `ER` = number of earned runs (number of runs that did not occur as a result of errors or passed balls)
- `IP` = number of innings pitched (number of outs a team gets while a pitcher is pitching divided by three)
