The Math / Science
The On-base Plus Slugging is a statistic calculated as the sum of a players (OBP) and (SLG). The ability of a player to both get on base and hit for power, two important offensive skills. The OPS of .900 or higher in major league baseball puts the player in the upper echelons of hitters. Typically, the league leader in OPS will score near, if not sometimes above, the 1.000 mark. The On-base Plus Slugging equation is:
OPS=OBP+SLG
where:
- OPS = On-base plus slugging
- OBP = On-base percentage
- SLG = Slugging Percentage
